Confession on the Verge of Overdrive
Exclusive Longread // 12 Revelations of Mia Shilina for the VitSem Lab Archive
1. Reviewer: Mia, the MIA UNIQUE project came as a complete surprise. How did the paths of Vitaly Semenov's heavy guitar signature and your female energy intersect?
Mia Shilina: "This was a conscious, incredibly brilliant concept. Vitaly originally curated this musical material, lyrics, and arrangements specifically for a powerful, uncompromising female execution. Before this, guitarist Tasha Ray and I were grinding out sultry hard-blues in underground Saint Petersburg clubs, pouring ourselves out as if every gig were our last. When Vitaly brought us these tracks, we realized it was a 100% perfect match. We didn't have to adapt to masculine songs; these narratives were written about us and for us."
2. Reviewer: The project's music delivers dense hard rock, powerful blues rock, and pop-rock. What is it like to translate female themes through such a heavy, gritty sound?
Mia Shilina: "There is simply no other way to sing about intense emotions! Authentic female drama isn't sappy pop fluff; it's a raw, exposed nerve. Just look at Beth Hart. When passion, pride, or disappointment are boiling inside you, you demand heavy tube overdrive and a dense, driving groove to express everything with zero inhibition. A gritty rock sound gives the songs incredible spatial depth and honesty. The Laboratory's masculine rock lineup provided us with a magnificent instrumental foundation, but we were the ones who breathed life into it."
From the Laboratory Chronicles // Fragment of the track "To Be a Woman"
I don't regret my words, I don't feel shame for my words.
It's not about a strong cocktail drunk with no inhibition.
It's just that long ago I became your second shadow.
I didn't guess, I didn't know that I would become so completely different...
My whole life — as if truth or a fairy tale, my whole life — sliding along the edge.
But, I pray, open the doors in your heart, I want so much to be your woman...
3. Reviewer: Guitarist Tasha Ray delivers insane drive on the recordings. How is her guitar style shaped within MIA UNIQUE?
Mia Shilina: "Tasha recognizes no compromise. No softness whatsoever — she plays with a heavy pick attack, squeezing maximum aggression and density from the strings when hard rock demands it. In everyday life, she restores heavy vintage motorcycles, and this mechanical, uncompromising character is visible in her style. She utilizes vicious analog overdrive pedals, and her riffs strike with a backhand blow, creating a flawless contrast with my vocal melodies."
4. Reviewer: What do you live by outside the Laboratory's studio walls? What helps you maintain this inner rock anchor?
Mia Shilina: "I am a total introvert; my salvation is silence and a massive collection of rare 1960s-1970s vinyl. I adore listening to archival root blues. Tasha, as I already mentioned, disappears in her garage or rewires electronics in her guitars. We can't stand empty social noise; all our energy flows directly into the microphones and strings during tracking at the Laboratory."

5. Reviewer: During your work on the albums, there must have been some funny or strange stories. Could you share the most memorable one?
Mia Shilina: "Oh, that happened during the tracking of an exceptionally powerful hard-rock ballad. A terrible storm rolled in, lightning struck right next to the studio, and the power in the entire Laboratory went completely dead. The computers shut down instantly. But the creative fire inside us was burning so hot that we refused to stop. Vitaly lit the candles and picked up an acoustic guitar, while Tasha grabbed hand percussion. I tracked the chorus directly into a phone voice recorder in total darkness beneath claps of thunder. There was so much raw, insane drive in that moment that we later delicately integrated this archival vocal take into the official release of the YOGA distributor's catalog."
6. Reviewer: The themes of your songs mostly explore complex, sometimes painful relationships. Why do you strike exactly at this target?
Mia Shilina: "Because love and human relationships are the heaviest hard rock in life. There are no cliché lyrics in our songs. This is a manifesto of a strong woman who knows how to love to madness, but also knows with razor-sharp b2b precision how to cut through false promises if a man drags her down to rock bottom. Rock and roll demands drama, and Vitaly's lyrics convey this psychology of relationships with a heart-wrenching emotional edge."
